Are super‐face‐recognisers also super‐voice‐recognisers? Evidence from cross‐modal identification tasks

چکیده

Individual differences in face identification ability range from prosopagnosia to super-recognition. The current study examined whether predicts voice (participants: N = 529). Superior-face-identifiers (exceptional at memory and matching), superior-face-recognisers only), superior-face-matchers matchers controls completed the Bangor Voice Matching Test, Glasgow Memory a Famous Recognition Test. Meeting predictions, those possessing exceptional matching skills outperformed typical-range groups respectively. Proportionally more super-face-identifiers also achieved our super-voice-recogniser criteria on two or tests. Underlying cross-modality (voices vs. faces) cross-task (memory perception) mechanisms may therefore drive superior performances. Dissociations between Test bell recognition suggest voice-specific effects match found with faces. These findings have applied implications for policing, particularly cases when only suspect clips are available.

senses, each tuned to a distinct form of energy and providing a unique window through which to experience the environment. The possession of multiple sensory systems provides considerable behavioural flexibility since input from one modality can substitute for another under circumstances of specific sensory deprivation. In darkness, for example, auditory and tactile cues might supplant visual i...

Sex differences in unfamiliar face identification: evidence from matching tasks.

Research on sex differences in face recognition has reported mixed results, on balance suggesting an advantage for female observers. However, it is not clear whether this advantage is specific to face processing or reflects a more general superiority effect in episodic memory. The current study therefore examined sex differences with a face-matching task that eliminates memory demands. Across t...

Crossmodal links in spatial attention are mediated by supramodal control processes: evidence from event-related potentials.

Crossmodal links in spatial attention were studied in an experiment where participants had to detect peripheral tactile or visual targets on the attended side, while ignoring all stimuli on the unattended side and in the currently irrelevant modality. Both relevant locations and relevant modalities were specified on a trial-by-trial basis by auditory precues. Spatial orienting in the cue-target...

Introducing Crossmodal Biometrics: Person Identification from Distinct Audio & Visual Streams

Person identification using audio or visual biometrics is a well-studied problem in pattern recognition. In this scenario, both training and testing are done on the same modalities. However, there can be situations where this condition is not valid, i.e. training and testing has to be done on different modalities. This could arise, for example, in covert surveillance. Is there any person specif...

Crossmodal action selection: evidence from dual-task compatibility.

Response-related mechanisms of multitasking were studied by analyzing simultaneous processing of responses in different modalities (i.e., crossmodal action). Participants responded to a single auditory stimulus with a saccade, a manual response (single-task conditions), or both (dual-task condition). We used a spatially incompatible stimulus-response mapping for one task, but not for the other....
